Halloween snuck up on me this year. In the past, I would start brainstorming by January because that is how much I normally love the art of costume making. Costumes have included everything from the little boy in Up! to the Golden Snitch in Harry Potter to French Toast to DeadMau5 (actually a dead Minnie Mouse), all mostly homemade and presented with excessive eagerness. This time around, the enthusiasm has considerably dampened in comparison, and I find myself contemplating just staying at home with a glass of wine and good candy to pass out to adorable trick-or-treating mini-ghouls, mini-goblins and hopefully – keeping my fingers crossed – no mini-twerking Miley Cyruses.
But there are ways to get in the Halloween spirit without going to the extreme, as well as making the look work- or school-appropriate for costume contests or spirit days. The lovely people at Tilly’s and I styled the two festive outfits above, and I suckered my beaut of a friend Cristina to try on one of the two looks. (More behind the cut!)
I don’t normally wear a lot of skulls (but I love skull motifs around the home). However, the faux leather leggings and studded boots were fitting complements to the edgy style, and the vest added a chunk of color to an otherwise monotone outfit. Cristina wore a muscle tee with a fabulously colorful lion graphic and paired it with very feline-worthy leopard print leggings. No cat ears? No problem! Two top knots will do the trick as a playful allusion to cat ears.
Tell me, what are your Halloween plans? Are you dressing up this year?
